Hot for Teacher: Intelligent Celebrities Who Were Almost Your College Professors

Celebrities are often stereotyped as being prettier than they are intelligent.

However, many went on to receive a Master’s degree or even a PhD. Here’s three celebrities who could have taught college courses and likely made more than a few students “hot for teacher.”

David Duchovny

Duchovny is best known for his long stint on The X-Files, where he played alien-hunting FBI Agent Fox Mulder alongside actress Gillian Anderson. His major work after The X-Files has been the Showtime hit Californication in which Duchovny plays a washed-up New York writer trying to keep his Los Angeles family together amid myriad sexual temptations. Critics wondered: what did this actor know about writing?

Quite a bit, as it turns out. David Duchovny majored in English in Princeton and completed a Master’s in English at Yale. He not only labored over the great American novel, he pursued a PhD in English at Yale. Before he could complete his dissertation, however, he was lured away by the world of acting.

Dolph Lundgren

For those who grew up in the 80’s and 90’s, Dolph Lundgren familiar as a villain to some of pop culture’s most celebrated heroes. Who else can claim to have fought both James Bond and Rocky? With his intimidating build and simple-minded dialogue, it’s easy to dismiss Lundgren as brawny-but-brainless.

Speaking of intelligent celebrities, Lundgren actually comes from a family of academics, and completed a Bachelor’s in Engineering before moving on to study Chemical Engineering at the Royal Institute of Stockholm, with additional studies at both Clemson University and Washington State University.

Ultimately, Lundgren graduated top of his class with a Master’s in Chemical Engineering and received a Fulbright scholarship to MIT. When the doctoral student needed extra cash, he tried modeling, which turned into acting. The rest is pugilistic history.

Meryl Streep

Meryl Streep is an actor for the ages. Some remember her earlier acting ventures such as The Deer Hunter or Sophie’s Choice. Others remember her ruthlessly entertaining performance in The Devil Wears Prada. Streep is another actor, though, with an interesting educational history.

She completed educational studies at Vassar University before completing a Master’s degree from the Yale School of Drama, where she studied alongside someone else: Sigourney Weaver. Most recently, she was awarded an honorary doctorate from Illinois University in recognition of her decades-spanning career in cinema.
